Let Us Stay

Harambee third grader Shayla Stewart gave permission for us to share this letter she sent to the 622 board on 20 January 2008.

My name is Shayla and i am in third grade. Plese let Harambee stay because it's like a home to me. I love having kids of my race around me while i learn. most of my friends are like black and white and tan like that. I love my teachers and my friends and having breaks too because we are year round. When i go to school i can open up to my friends and teachers too. The peolpe that are doing this or suggesting to take Harambee away are making a big mistake. I love Harambee! I have alot of friends there too. I have been there since Kindergarten. Please let it stay! Threre are alot of good people there. for examaple like my mom .also robyn dobbs - she is good too. Please don't do it. Stay partners with my school!

I'm so glad you like the school so much -- and it makes me really proud of you as a student, and Harambee as a school, that you can write such a great letter. Thank you!

Shayla, you are such an important part of our classroom and I couldn't imagine losing you or any other student I've learned from and with. Thank you for sending such a great message!

Shayla, you were WONDERFUL tonight. Black, white, tan! You are beautiful and I am so glad you were able to speak to the school board. Thank you for getting up there, I'm sure it was a bit scary (I know it was for me!). We will do everything we can to keep you at Harambee!
